How GSM and Size Change the Cost of a Throw Blanket

GSM is fabric weight in grams per square metre, and a throw's face fabric weighs its area times its GSM — so fabric use rises in direct proportion to both. A 127 × 152 cm throw at 300 GSM uses about 0.58 kg of face fabric; a 150 × 200 cm throw at the same GSM uses about 0.90 kg, some 55% more. Construction, printing, edge finish and packing add to that. Tulip's design team in Nantong, China adjusts these levers to reach your target price.

Fabric Weight

Face Fabric per Throw, by Size and GSM

Area × GSM gives the weight of face fabric in one finished throw. Use it to compare options before you ask for a price.

Beyond GSM

What Else Drives the Price

Fabric weight is the biggest single lever, but not the only one.

Cost drivers of a throw blanket beyond GSM
Driver How it changes cost Example
ConstructionA double-layer or reversible throw adds a second fabric with its own GSM.Faux fur + flannel, fleece + sherpa
Printing methodDigital printing suits shorter runs, fast sampling and complex artwork; rotary / screen printing suits large runs of stable repeat designs at controlled cost.Digital for a sampling run, screen for the bulk repeat
Edge finishOverlock is the cost-efficient finish; binding adds durability and a cleaner premium edge; mitered-corner binding gives a tailored picture-frame look.Overlock on value throws, binding on premium ranges
PackingVacuum packing compresses bulky blankets and cuts shipping volume; roll and gift packing add retail presentation.Vacuum bag for e-commerce, gift box for seasonal gifting
Size vs fabric widthHow the finished size fits across the fabric width affects cutting loss.We work with fabric widths of 160–300 cm

FAQ

Buyer Questions

What does GSM mean for a blanket?

GSM means grams per square metre — the weight of the fabric. A 300 GSM fabric weighs 300 g per square metre, so a 127 × 152 cm (1.93 m²) throw in that fabric carries about 0.58 kg of face fabric.

Does a higher GSM mean a better throw?

Not by itself. A higher GSM puts more fabric in every square metre, which usually makes a heavier, denser and warmer throw, but hand feel also depends on the fiber, pile and construction. Choose the GSM that gives the hand feel you need at your target price.

What GSM are flannel fleece throws?

Our 100% polyester flannel fleece throws commonly run 180–350 GSM. The final weight is set per program, and a double-layer construction adds the weight of the reverse fabric.

How can we reach our target price without changing the look?

Send the target price with your brief. Our 5-person design team adjusts the levers that change the look least — GSM, the reverse fabric, edge finish, printing method and packing — to reach a version that can be mass-produced at your price.

Can you make custom sizes?

Yes. Beyond the standard US, UK and EU throw sizes, we make any custom size to order on fabric widths of 160–300 cm.
